Covering 1.5 million square feet with inflatable festivities, the International Balloon Festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu presents an elaborate, nine-day spectacle of hot air balloons, live pop acts, and family activities. Full-day passes grant access to stages that host pop stars such as Ke$ha (August 13), Marie-Mai (August 15), and Sean Paul (August 17). One hundred twenty-five hot air balloons from Canada, the United States, Brazil, France, and the Land of Oz launch daily at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and allow passengers to diplomatically shake hands with passing clouds (ride not included in today’s deal). Kids climb, slide, and jump off interactive inflatables that adorn the fields of Balloon Planet, and adults cool down with a beer at Budweiser Terrace. Three different evenings boast Laurentian Bank Night Glows, during which balloons morph into lanterns that illuminate each spectator’s grin and glow-in-the-dark underwear as jugglers, acrobats, and fire-eaters perform amid the radiance.
