During three-hour Wine Basics classes at The Master School of Bartending, students sip red, white, and sparkling wines while their brains imbibe wisdom from the French sommelier Pierrick Lhotellier. Pupils grasp grape-growing and harvesting techniques and uncover the secrets of the bottling process. The instructor surveys the fruits of the world’s most prolific wine-producing countries, such as France, Italy, Chile, Argentina, and the United States, and deconstructs varietal names. While tasting pinot noirs and chardonnays, students practice judging the qualities of the product using the “five S” method of shake, smell, see, sip, and savour. Participants can entertain guests with flair after learning how to properly store and serve red wine and understand appropriate food-and-wine pairings. An informal bar-top setting and small class size facilitate friendly conversation among participants.
